NEWS of Pakistan

Shahbaz Sharif has been elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second time after voting in the National Assembly during General elections 2024.

Sharif, of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was the chosen candidate of the new eight-party coalition for the post of Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The coalition was formed after no party was able to win an absolute majority in the February 8 2024 general elections of Pakistan.

In the official session of the National Assembly on Sunday, Shahbaz Sharif won against Umar Ayub, the candidate nominated by independent candidates affiliated to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who will now form the opposition in the parliament.

Sharif is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, who previously held the title of Prime Minister of Pakistan three times.

In his victory speech, Shahbaz Sharif thanked his elder brother and claimed that he was the one who built Pakistan.

His election as prime minister came after weeks of political wrangling following the February 8 election.
