Pakistan confirmed on Wednesday that it had carried out airstrikes in Kashmir and shot down two Indian jets in its own airspace, capturing one of the pilots as the conflict with its nuclear-armed neighbour continued to escalate.

“Today, Pakistan Air Force undertook strikes across Line of Control from within Pakistani airspace,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Pakistan military said Indian jets had entered Pakistan in response and two had been shot down, with one pilot captured.

Pakistan shot down two Indian Air Force planes in its airspace in Kashmir on Wednesday, a military spokesman said, adding that one Indian pilot had been captured, as reported by AFP.

“PAF shot down two Indian aircrafts inside Pakistani airspace,” tweeted military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor, adding that one aircraft had fallen in Pakistani-held Kashmir, while the other crashed on the Indian side.

“One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground while two in the area,” he said without elaborating further.

According to Dr Mohammad Faisal, as qouted by Dawn, the Pakistan Armed Forces undertook strikes across LoC from Pakistani airspace. The sole purpose of this action was to demonstrate “our right, will and capability for self-defence. We do not wish to escalate but are fully prepared if forced into that paradigm.”

An IAF fighter jet crashed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam area, killing two pilots, according to ANI reports. Reports also claim that the pilot and co-pilot have been killed in the incident.

A statement was issued by Major General Asif Ghafoor, the Spokesperson for the Pakistan Armed Forces: “Pakistan was a democratic country and believed that two democracies could not fight with each other. But India proved it was not a democracy. You have chosen a path of war, without knowing the consequences for peace and stability in the region.”

Pakistan had fought for 15 years to bring peace and stability in the region. A joint session of the parliament and the National Command Authority meeting had been summoned on the issue, the statement continued.

Indian and Pakistani troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector are using mortars and small arms to target each other in Kamalkote area since earlier in the day, the defence sources confirmed, adding that the exchanges were continuing.

People living close to the LoC are scared following heightened tension between the two neighbours, as reported by IANS.

 

Heavy firing exchanges were also continuing intermittently at 40 places on the LoC, including Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu districts since Tuesday night.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on India and Pakistan to “exercise restraint” amid soaring tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries, while urging Islamabad to take action against militants.

 

“We encourage India and Pakistan to exercise restraint, and avoid escalation at any cost,” Pompeo said in a statement after speaking with his counterparts from both countries.

Pompeo said that in talks with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, he stressed “the priority of de-escalating current tensions by avoiding military action, and the urgency of Pakistan taking meaningful action against terrorist groups operating on its soil.”

India said Tuesday that it launched strikes against militant camps in Pakistan – New Delhi’s first use of air strikes on its neighbour’s territory since the two countries went to war in 1971.

Pakistan, while confirming the incursion, denied India’s claim that the attack had inflicted major damage and casualties on militants.

Police said security forces started a cordon and search operation in Mamender village of Shopian district following specific information about the presence of militants there.

“When the cordon around the hiding militants was tightened, they fired at the security forces triggering the ongoing encounter,” police said.
